Clean Room Exposure

Negligence in the High Tech Sector

In an increasingly information-based economy, "clean rooms" may be the modern day equivalent of the coal mine in the 1950s and 1960s.

As it is, the number of clean room operations in the United States continues to rise annually. In California, home to Silicon Valley and much of the U.S. computer and semi-conductor industries, there are nearly 200 such facilities. In Arizona, there are at least 18 such facilities in the Phoenix area alone.

What many people who worked in those clean rooms are now discovering is that the bunny suits and the air filter systems only protected the microchips — not anyone's health.

At Plattner Verderame, P.C., we understand the relationship between many of the chemicals used by employers today and the birth defects that some children of their employees are born with. We know how to establish that connection. We are here and ready to help. Call or contact our Phoenix area law offices today and ask to speak with a lawyer.

The Connection Between Clean Room Chemicals and Birth Defects

A number of toxic chemicals and solvents are routinely used in the manufacture of computer chips and semiconductors. What clean room workers are finding out now is that the protective garments they had to wear did nothing to protect them from the health effects of exposure to toxic solvents and other chemical compounds. Nor did the air filtration systems. In fact, the air filters were designed only to trap dust while the air itself, loaded with chemical fumes, was recirculated over and over and over again throughout the fab.

Commonly used clean room chemicals known to damage reproductive health include:

  • Ethylene glycol ether
  • Toluene
  • Cadmium
  • Arsenic
  • Benzene
  • Trichloroethylene
  • Freon
  • Xylene

Many of these chemicals are known carcinogens that have been linked to brain tumors, bone tumors, breast cancer and leukemia in clean room workers. A number of these chemicals have drastic effects on the human reproductive system and have been linked to birth defects that include missing or deformed limbs, brain damage and mild to severe cognitive impairment.
