Two women, age 53 and 73, were hiking  through Camelback Mountain in Phoenix for five hours Friday before suffering heat exhaustion and being rescued by firefighters.

Authorities received a call at about 11 a.m. reporting the two women had been overcome by heat and needed help on the Cholla Trail near 61st and Cholla streets. The two began their hike at about 6 a.m., said Capt. Tony Mure of the Phoenix Fire Department.

The women reported feeling dizzy from the heat and needed help down the east side of Camelback Mountain, Mure said. They had brought water on their hike.

The 53-year-old woman was able to walk down with aid from firefighters, but crews needed to use a "big wheel" - a large basket balanced on a single tire - to help the 73-year-old down. Both were from out of state.

The high temperature was about 94 degrees at 6 a.m. in Phoenix and 103 degrees at 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service .
