An 11-year-old boy trying run across a Maricopa intersection apparently misjudged the distance of an oncoming vehicle and was struck, authorities said.
The boy, who was hospitalized with minor injuries Wednesday, told police he thought he could run across the street at Goles Drive and Venture Road before the car reached the intersection, said Sgt. Stephen Judd, a spokesman for the Maricopa Police Department.
The driver told police he didn't see the boy until he was on the hood of his car, police said.
The incident is being treated as an accident, police said, and the driver has not been charged.
DO YOUR KIDS HAVE TO CROSS A BUSY STREET TO GET TO SCHOOL? Is there a crossing guard? Will it be especially dangerous in winter when kids are crossing in the dark? If there is a dangerous crossing near you or that your kids use, SOUND OFF. Write to the City and the school district and explain the problem and the location, and why it is hazardous. Remember: phone calls float away on the air, but letters get filed and motivate folks better.
