A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by a Honda sedan while riding her bicycle home from school in Mesa Monday morning.
The girl, who wasn't wearing a helmet, was crossing the intersection at Gilbert Road and Southern Avenue around 7:30 a.m. when a car struck her, Mesa Fire Capt. Forrest Smith said.
Smith said the vehicles had a green light but some were able to stop for the girl to cross. One driver of a Honda Accord did not see the girl and hit her going about 40 mph in a 45 mph speed limit zone. The driver immediately got out the car to help the girl, said Mesa Police Sgt. Ed Wessing.
The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with police.
The girl was apparently semi-responsive when crews arrived. She was flown to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.
She reportedly suffered a broken arm and leg, and head injuries, Smith said.
The girl was apparently riding alone from Mesa High School to her home near Greenfield Road and Southern Avenue, Wessing said.
Her parents knew she was riding her bike back from the school. It was unclear was the girl was doing at the school. Classes resume Wednesday in Mesa. Smith advised parents to talk with their kids about wearing a helmet when riding a bike and follow all traffic laws.
Mesa police were investigating the collision and the driver will not face any charges.
